LUN is a search engine for real estate, created to help people choose the right apartment in Ukraine and Russia.

The real estate market in Ukraine is not so developed as its neighbors in Europe and USA. Choosing between different apartments for daily rent, lease and even buying the one is the huge pain. LUN is a search engine that is capable to solve the choosing problem, aggregating the information from different web catalogues into single feed with reliable information and photos of each apartment.

I was invited to work in LUN as a user interface designer, however, in several months it revealed that interface work is not enough and there is a need to work on a product side.

For one year in LUN with my help the amount of monthly users was increased from 20 000 to 200 000. There was added a social project for searching the leasing apartment and new visual language.

Global objectives at LUN

In the project I can highlight two goals. The first, contextualized, can be characterized as the generation of traffic in all possible ways. To change the behavior  in searching the apartments via old-school web ads to the brand new search via search engine. Secondary objective is usable search. By the time, the company’s slogan became “Comfortable real estate search”.

Challenges

The most uneasy challenge in the company was working with the post-soviet markets in that the huge amount of people don’t know how to use the search and how the internet works in general. Accordingly, communication language with the user couldn’t work similar to western analogues, nevertheless, I had to adhere to trends.

Second challenge was inheriting the SEO techniques on each page. Initially people searched their apartments via Google and Yandex, LUN was bypassed because of low links ranging. After working on relining all the pages, LUN got to the top of Google and Yandex results. At the very end, Ukrainians and Russians are searching for the right apartment via LUN.

Third challenge is big vary of projects at LUN. The project is divided by three different departments, each of them has different visitors segment by solvency and level of awareness in a specific topic of real estate. I had to divide the functionality by three different projects and adopt them for each type of audience.

User experience

User experience. Working on layouts I had to empathize with website users. For each project. Every single day.

Visual design & communications

I had to follow guidelines, define and inherit the style and develop the brand.

Ideation, research, discovery

I needed to analyze all the competitor websites, references and adopt them to Ukrainian realities, thereby generating new ideas.

Sketches

I haven’t the deadlines, so having the typical process of design development had no sense. I was advised to sketch all the ideas and present them to the management team.

LUN Daily rent

Search engine for renting the apartment like on Airbnb, but instead of the internal system of adding the listing items, the feed with all the apartment in selected area, collected from web ads.

LUN Real Estate

This is the most profitable LUN project which works in a way where all the data doesn’t aggregate from the real estate websites, but the catalog constantly updates instead by sales team.

We’ve developed the LUN Real estate website considering atomic design system as the main one. It allowed us to build the intependent wrapper for each property we’ve promoted.

LUN Leasing

This this the service for searching apartments for leasing. It works in the same way as daily rent search.

LUN Daily rent

LUN.Neighbors was founded by several reasons. Firstly, Ukrainian Facebook and VK segment is full of calls for help to find the apartment by the desired cost and value, with limited list of needs and importance. In 90% cases people scrolling through these calls.

This project appeared for creating catchy ads with generated infographic about the person who wants to rent the apartment by known demands.

To help people understand how to create an infographic, we’ve developed the instruction.

Then the visitor fills all the required fields.

LUN projects

The best explanation of the development process is “Imagine that your mom using your site”. It’s the type of empathy I used to develop LUN website.

The bigger amount the links on the website, the better Google and Yandex rankings.

Map helps user understand the context of search results, but it shouldn’t be centric point. People read text better.

Price is the most important point. Every else parameter goes after the price.

People stick to the subway stations, they are less interested in a specific district.

There are a lot of scammers disguised as a realtors who are trying to entice pre-payments and then they disappear.

In Ukraine realtors are evil, who deceive and withdraw double price of the apartment. Non-intermediary filter used to be popular.

To produce trust for a real estate developer, you need to be honest by 100% and fill the according page properly, giving maximum information and proofs of its honest.

Ukrainians aged 40+ are hard to perceive the user interface. If you want to create a successful website for all the ages, you need to explain each part that may confuse your user.

LUN became the default search for all the visitors and the phrase “Google it” transformed into “Search on LUN”
